Using Social Media Like Facebook To Find The Cupcake Truck

Posted by Mongo

Ok, I know, what does a cupcake truck have to do with t-shirts? Nothing, except that it's a business that you could start and do well with during an economic downturn. So, in essence this is a post about business and success, using social media, outside of selling t-shirts.  Here is the story from NPR.

Basically, what I am passing along is that Sean Moore saw a need and fulfilled it.   He kept up with a trend and used social media, which is essentially free, to advertise and it paid off in a good ROI.   He has a facebook page and blog for his business, kind of like me.  He sets out on the road in the morning with his delivery truck packed with cupcakes.  He stops somewhere around Denver and then makes his presence known using Facebook.  Soon, customers begin showing up to buy his treats.

The fact that he charges $2.75 per cupcake astounded me but when I heard his plan of making $1000 a day in sales I thought, "Wow, that would be awesome if I pulled half that amount in shirt sales a day."   So, how hard could it be to run a side business like this if you don't have a full time job?   Sean says in the article that it's tough to keep up with the social networking but it's probably a definite benefit to his business.  As it is, he says the cupcake truck is used to augment his bakery sales.  Like me, I have a full time job and I use my shirt shops as extra income.   You could, too.

Start checking out ideas and maybe you might find yourself a newly formed business selling something like maple bacon cupcakes to the masses out on the busy streets of your town... or even shirts about cupcakes.

Father's Day Shirts

Father’s Day. The epitome of bad ties, homemade gifts and unfulfilled promises of a relaxing day. Of course, isn’t that always the case? Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are kind of a joke holiday, much like Arbor Day. As a parent, at least one that is not retired, it is nearly impossible to relax on a Sunday in the late Spring, early Summer transitional period. There’s too many things to do. I have a yard, a pool, a wife, a child. There’s no rest for the wicked, just a series of things to do while I am home from work, holiday be damned.

But what about those males who aren’t exactly the father type? Maybe you made a deposit at a “bank” for some extra cash in college or maybe you are David Crosby. In any case, the end result is that you have a child out there and damnit, you should be able to celebrate as well. That’s why Mongo Angry! Mongo Smash! recognizes that even though you may or may not have been there for the conception, you should be able to get your fair share of lousy ties… or these cool shirts and other stuff.

Deepwater Horizon Spill Leaves Us Beyond Pwned

In case you’ve been living in a missile silo in North Dakota, you are probably quite aware of the Deepwater Horizon Disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. Basically, or should I say ironically, President Obama approves offshore drilling and then this rig explodes leaving an underwater pipe spewing oil into the ocean. It is being called the worst environmental disaster in U.S. history, more so than the Exxon Valdez, more so than Three Mile Island. Notice the underlying thread that ties it all together, power and energy. Anyway, BP sets up a camera feed underwater and the world watches in disgust. I spent an hour and a half watching the thing before I realized it wasn’t the series finale of LOST and went over to ABC.com.

People got pissed. Top Hat failed. Top Kill failed. The latest attempt, called Lower Marine Riser Package (LMRP) involves cutting the damaged pipe away in order to work with a clean end. Well, the saw got stuck. Seems like Louisiana and the Gulf just can’t seem to catch a break. After being hit by Katrina, the best thing to happen to them was the Saints winning the Super Bowl. Way to steal Drew Brees’ thunder BP.

So, everyone got out their thinking caps and went to town designing anti-bp and boycott bp designs. I went the more subtle route. 11 people died in the explosion. Marine life is changed and threatened. Shrimping and fishing in the Gulf is screwed. Tourism is down. BP’s stock has plummeted as has the price of oil Regardless of who takes charge of the disaster or who cleans it up, we’re all beyond pwned.
